Can anybody help me with this Emily Dickinson poem "Sleep is supposed to be"?
I have to teach the class about this poem in a few days, and I can't figure out what it means, I would appreciate any help. Thank You!
Sleep is supposed to be,
By souls of sanity,
The shutting of the eye.
Sleep is the station grand
Down which on either hand
The hosts of witness stand!
Morn is supposed to be,
By people of degree,
The breaking of the day.
Morning has not occurred!
That shall aurora be
East of eternity;
One with the banner gay,
One in the red array, --
That is the break of day.|||Emily is not the easiest poet to figure and I've not studied her academically, just read her quite a bit.
But I'll share my gleanings and maybe they'll spark some thoughts of your own.
I think this poem, like so many of hers, is concerned with death.
She grew up churched and was fascinated by many of the ideas of Christianity, although she rejected quite a few of the teachings. Nevertheless the themes of death and resurrection seem to have fascinated her.
For the Christian death is called sleep. But in everyday use sleep is just that time of 'shutting the eye' and letting the mind go wander for a while. And I think it is this second natural kind of sleep she alludes to in the first stanza. She is, nevertheless, setting us up for a further exploration of sleep, and I don't think she is eliminating by any means the allusion to the sleep which waits for the resurrection, even in the first verse. It is just that she is so incredibly subtle about it.
In the second stanza I believe she is referring to the sleep of death and the host of witnesses is probably taken from Hebrews 11.
The third stanza goes back to ordinary life--morning is when the day breaks. But again, there is the subtle movement which prepares us for the Morning of eternity which she comes out with in the fourth stanza. That aurora shall be east of eternity.
No more daily life sleeping and waking cycle, but the final morning hen Christ returns (although what place she gives him is debatable--what is not, is that her terms of thought are taken largely from the Bible in this).
And the last stanza adds to the fourth and confirms the break of the day when there is no more night, no more death, no more mourning, for all is morning, light, aurora.
She is a poet who has to be felt, and I think this is a very difficult poem for introducing people to her. There are more accessible poems. And this one becomes more accessible when one has more of her poems which show her deep interest and fascination with death and with resurrection.
Where she gets her banners and red array from I'm not sure, and not sure how important it is to pars them. They give us a picture of flags waving and gay red costumes, combined with a light and break of a day that will never end--a day which removes death from the realm of human experience forever.
The great thing about Emily Dickinson to me is the incredible intensity and lucidity of her mind and thought. It's not necessarily always attractive--it can be morbid--but at her best she strikes the soul as speaking of that which is true--there is an integrity in her writings that can't be missed. If you get
her. But I also think there is an intuitive element that one either gets or doesn't get and no amount of analyzing can make her come to life for people.
So if I were teaching it, I would show the connections between ordinary life -sleep and waking- and the sleep of death and rising to eternity, but I wouldn't try to parse it too deeply.
You might find some other poems where she talks about her view of death and of resurrection and eternity (short ones) to
kind of prepare the students for this poem. And talk about that.
I don't personally find this poem to be one that moves me greatly, where there are some of her poems where I feel she is speaking for me--what I had not been able to put into words. and she did it perfectly.

so if she is saying she is not sane, and her sun has not risen and will never rise, do you think she is saying she's happy? sad? angry? think of what light can be a metaphor for.
the writer is saying that she can't sleep and that as far as she is concerned, the sun will never rise, her world is dark.

I would say the 2nd stanza refers the sleeping eye. "Hosts of witness" probably means a person's two eyes (you witness things with your eyes). So a place where sleeping eyes 'gather' is at the grand station of sleep, figuratively.
I'm stuck on the last stanza as well. I would say she's referring to each of the eyes. "One with the banner gay" is one eye, "one in the red array" is the other eye? What are the laws on advertising?
Me and a few friends are planning on advertising for an event this Friday. It's really snowy outside and we were going to stomp a banner in the snow and pour red kool aid in the snow to make it jump out. We're just not all too sure it's legal.|||In the snow ... where? Was it right for the Mexicans to change the words to the "Star Spangled Banner'?

I am wanting to get a tattoo with my kids' names but I cannot decide which one I want. Here are some ideas I have. Double hearts and the names. No banner. 2 red roses and the names. Hi, I was setting up my myspace and trying to find a banner for the top, I wanted it to be the Japanese flag (red dot flag) but I cant find a banner made like that. Do you hate "I call Shenanigans " thing on youtube?
Every time I log into youtube i get that red banner that reads " I call shenanigans" and will not have me logged in. I've backspaced ,open another tab, and tried everything I can but I still get that. What kind of banner is this?
I have recently seen a banner hanging in the window of a house, visible to passers-by. It is about a foot wide horizontally and two feet long vertically. There is a wide red border (about 2 inches wide) around the edge of the banner. Inside the border it is white, except for a blue five-pointed star at the exact center of the banner. There is gold fringe hanging from the bottom of the banner. Does the banner represent anything special, or is it just decorative?|||No, it is NOT just decorative. Having a blue star banner in your window shows that you have a family member serving in the armed forces. Can be used in peace time, but mainly used during war-time. So people know that your loved one(s) are overseas.

I wanted to know where I could get a event banner made. If there is a place or website that does this list it. Like you see them mostly at award shows. People take pictures in front of them. Like at the BET Awards on the red carpet they have the banners people pose in front of. They have the logos and names of people who sponsered the event. I'm throwing my first party in Saginaw, Michigan. It's a really big party and I want it to look the best. Please help me out. Why are there rockets and bombs in the 'star spangled banner'. were they used in the revolution?
From what i remember in history class and historical movies; weapons in the american revolution were limited to rifle bayonets, swords and cannons. which makes me curious why there were rockets (red glare) and bombs (bursting in air) used in the star spangled banner.|||~First of all, you've got the wrong war. The poem wasn't written during the War for Colonial Independence (it was NOT a revolution). It was written during the war of 1812.

the pop up can expand to a width of 10m, and starts from about 3 m, depends how much space you have.
there not cheap, but if you have the time and resources, it would be wise to order them from japan or china %26amp; have the print made in the US, i think you'll be able to save so cash that way.
otherwise, ask any local advertising agincy to print you a banner with your costum size, be sure to ask for a "flix-Face" banner with out-door prefrebly ink-jet printing, then just hang the banner on a woden partitian. that should even cost less.|||try kinkos

I just created a website, the banner I built shows up on 2 pages, not on any others.?
This is only the 2nd site I've created so I'm still learning. The banner is showing up on the 1st 2 pages but not on any of the following pages. It's a banner so the source name is the same yet all I get is the little red x on the remaining pages. Help please! I definitely would have! The whole history, national culture, the Red Banner, and military uniforms, have fascinated me my entire life. I think if it had survived, it would look a lot like Communist China, though.
Life in America is pretty chaotic, and maybe the whole social system there would have seemed a lot better. There were things like job security, free university and health care, etc. so maybe people there didn't stress as much. *shrugs*|||Dont forget the cops beating the **** out of you. not being able to make a better life for your self. waiting 7 years to get a car cause all the government people are getting them first. an extreamly corrupt government. i would of visited just to see how it was. there was great national pride and that is something you dont see in america much.|||Im studiying that subject right now, i would visit it, sounds very interesting :D

Will someone help design a banner for my site?
Howdy,
I'm not sure how many people will reply to this, or even read it for that matter. But I figured I should try.
I have a website(sorry if this seems like advertising), Neutral

If you follow the first URL, to the main page, you can see it is pretty blank. The forum, which is the second URL, isn't nearly as bad, and can be left alone for now.
I would love to have a nice background, and a banner too. I am not artsy at all, so I can't really do this very well. I also know very little about HTML/CSS, only enough to get this up there and modified. But that's not hard in DreamWeaver.
I would like for someone to create a banner or too, for the site. Maybe a background.... I would also like to know how to make a little logo for right next to the address bar... I guess we would need a site logo first, eh? heh
I can't pay for anyone to do this for me, but if someone likes art or something, I would love any help.

How do I get rid of the red X's?
Help! When I'm using myspace, many of my friends pictures just show up as red X's and so do flash players etc. I do have flash player installed, and ive ticked the setting "show images" under interet options. But they're still there and it's so irritating. I want to play some music on my profile but it won't work because the box where it is just shows up as a big fat X. also, my layout doesnt show properly, the contact box, extended network banner as well as the background are basically blank. this problem only started occuring yesterday, everything worked 麓before. i came back from france on sunday and hooked up my laptop to the internet here, and that's when the problem showed up. It's a different internet connection than i used to have, but still wireless, ad my brother has the same connection but this problem does not show up on his laptop. How to add a banner on my web site?
Actually, it is a Website for a local Swim Club, and I would like to have the ability on the front page to put a "banner" saying Pool open or closed if weather issue. Kind of a green/red Flag Banner that a lifeguard could change at will by accessing my web-site in a simple way. I was contemplating adding a Chat with a Update Live Message but is there an easier way to do it more efficiently?|||Very easy way, a small database or xml file with a programming language.

Does anyone know how to get that stupid red border off my verizon phone.?
I have a verizon wireless cell phone and it has this red border on it and says verizon wireless. No it's not the banner and it's nothing like that, trust me I've checked everything out.|||That's standard on every Verizon phone, that part of the layout cannot be changed.|||You say it's not the banner, but try this.. go to MENU, DISPLAY, BANNER, ERI BANNER, OFF. That's how I get rid of mine! I hope I helped. If you already tried that, then I really don't know what to tell you.
What does everyone think of the tattoo I want to get as a memorial to my girlfriend who died in a car accident
I posted this question already and got feedback. I took people's advice and went with her initials on top and the date of the accident on the banner.
This is what I have so far:

The colour scheme goes as follows. . .
The heart will be red.
The banner will be dark blue.
The wings will be dark blue and black and maybe a little white, depending on how the artist shades it when he sketches it.
The barbed wire and lettering for her initials and date will be dark blue.
The rose will be a deep scarlet which was her favourite colour of rose.
The stem will be dark green, as will be the thorns.
I am bad at shading so this is a rough idea of what I want, I will have the artist shade it to make everything look more real. I would like people's input, girls especially. What would you think if a guy you were serious with had this tattoo, knowing the situation.|||Well being a girl and a tattoo artist, the tattoo looks great you did a good job. Who ever you bring it to should easily make it look fantastic. I think if it's the right person for you then they'd understand. "The rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air..." Everyone knows this famous line, but what did this really look like? I'm doing a painting which depicts this famous night, and I want it to be authentic. Can anyone describe what this looked like? Could you link a picture possibly? I've searched around but I cant find anything that seems to fit the description properly.|||It very likely looked exactly like what Francis Scott Key was seeing when he wrote the SSB. He was being detained on an English vessel in the Baltimore Harbor. A battle between English ships and American on-land military raged all the night that Key was detained on the ship. Have you noticed that the Weather Channel website seems to be a lot less accurate lately?
Maybe they are pretty accurate with the temperature predictions, but everything else is totally bogus lately.
If it says 70% chance of rain, it doesn't rain. If it they have those big red banners screaming about "severer thunderstorms", there are never any storms. It seems like they are grossly exaggerating the weather to scare people or cover their azz.

Why does my link banner work on some sites and not on others?

I've been seeing banner ads for a game called "Evony". It looks interesting but is it safe to use?
I though about trying this game out but I don't want to download, annoying pop-up ads and other garbage. It's suppose to be a free game so that's a red flag.|||It's not a downloading game, but it is text based and no pop up ads whatsoever, there is abit of graphics and it is free unless you buy "packages"|||I've seen it too and I'm not even gonna try playing it. So... when should we hoist up the Red Banner of China?|||The amount of time for homework goes up by grade. I never had homework in the early elementary grades when I was in school. My grandchildren do even in kindergarten. I can see practicing reading, spelling, and handwriting but a heavy load of homework too early can make children hate school.
The trick is to make learning interesting. I used to tell my children to look things up and we made it fun. They enjoyed it. Learning to research is what most people learn in college and continue all their lives. That is really what makes them educated. It is a lifelong experience.

China can't consistently protect its milk supply.
The world largest shopping mall is in China and there is one tenant in that mall. The rest of it sits vacant and unused.
The Ordos region has a spectacular brand new city that remains largely vacant because people don't want to live there and can't afford to live there.
Does this sound like a nation that can beat any other nation?|||China has numerous structural weaknesses. It is Japan, but on steroids and without a solid footing. China will certainly continue to grow, but how can they have a middle class of almost 1 billion people? Not likely. And literally over 1/4th of loans given by the Chinese banks default... not a good sign of internal development. China is only noticeable because of its size and currency reserves. They are making tremendous efforts to move forward, but in 5 years, consider what I said. China may very well be facing a big crisis with a property bubble, similar to what we faced, but not as bad.
I would suggest looking at nations like Brazil, Turkey, Poland, etc... these are solid countries with good economic development. They are not growing as fast per se, but it is likely they will keep growing solidly, for years to come. 20 years from now, Turkey will be a power house, I believe.
But, if you want to get into the fine details, the US is in HUGE trouble because it doesn't pay for its entitlements:

I don't know how anyone thinks a tax cut is possible at a time when the fiscal deficit will soon become worse than Greece's and you have many, many more bills for the future. I wish the best for them.|||China is not a foolish Nation, they learn from history. Japan industrialised just as quickly as China is doing now. Japan believed it could replace Western Imperialism with it's own version of Eastern Imperialism. The result? for Japan it was catastrophe, it was not just that Japans industrial base was no match for Americas, but Japan lacked the historical know how and experience that America had. China is enjoying wealth, luxury and success now, what makes you think they want to pick a fight with America?|||No.|||Where's the happy medium here? 10 minutes is too little, I agree. 5 hours is too much. An hour or two a night seems like a good place to rest.
You also left out the word "average" in your statement and for someone who seems to be terrified and disapproving of China you seem to be pushing their methods a bit hard.|||China is increasing capitalism, and obama is decreasing capitalism.
I will bet there are no teachers unions in China,,,,,,,,,,,yet.

Clearly that is not everywhere. My daughter spent hours on homework everyday and couldn't finish it all.
She would do it after school, after dinner, before bed, before school and on the bus ride to school and before class. She had no time to be a kid.
We eventually pulled her out home schooled her, it was ridiculous.|||The amount of homework has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence. In fact, some experiments have resulted in MORE efficient learning through LESS hours of homework.
So no. China will not take over the world.|||I train on Nutrition and Physical activity in a pre-k environment. Here's a great stat for you. Kids go to school 920 hours a year here. They spend on average 1030 hours a year watching TV
What do YOU think they are learning?|||Nope.|||That means pretty much nothing. The amount of homework doesn't reflect the quality of work nor does it measure the ability of students to comprehend the lessons.|||When you move to China you can|||That's only part of China, I think like 17% is completely illiterate.|||they also probably lose out on a lot of common Sense when they've constantly got a book in their face.|||Nope.|||The more Liberal we become the further we will fall behind...It's the nature of Liberalism to be lazy and eff off...

Chinese kids do 5 hours of homework a night. Our kids are being limited to 10 minutes of homework (you read that right) a night.
So... when should we hoist up the Red Banner of China?|||The amount of time for homework goes up by grade. I never had homework in the early elementary grades when I was in school. My grandchildren do even in kindergarten. I can see practicing reading, spelling, and handwriting but a heavy load of homework too early can make children hate school.
The trick is to make learning interesting. I used to tell my children to look things up and we made it fun. They enjoyed it. Learning to research is what most people learn in college and continue all their lives. That is really what makes them educated. It is a lifelong experience.
China will over take the US soon. Our whole basis for our economy has been transferred there and to other countries. What is the point of educating people so stringently when there will be little left here but becoming a tourist attraction?|||So you're taking the singular example of one elementary school in New Jersey and referring to it as "our kids", as if this applies to every school in the United States?
And I go to a University with a high amount of foreign exchange students from China (since it is primarily a math and engineering school), and it's pretty obvious that the students who spend most of their time with their faces buried in books have no ability to communicate with others.
